Before: Health Matters was a hospital-centric publication focused primarily on institutional updates.
After: Healthy Journey Magazine was redesigned around the reader — connecting population health insights with patient-centered storytelling. The shift ignited community interest and increased readership by more than 1,500%.

The Situation

The existing publication, Health Matters, functioned as a hospital-centered magazine with limited reader engagement and little connection to how patients actually consume health information.

Our Strategy

We began by testing a single variable: the cover.

Without changing content or distribution, we redesigned the cover to reflect a more lifestyle-oriented, reader-first approach. The result was immediate—a 500% increase in readership for that issue.

That signal informed a full editorial repositioning. We reimagined the publication as Healthy Journey Magazine, designed around patient education, community relevance, and real-world health content.

The Result

The redesign transformed the publication into a high-performing patient education platform.

Readership increased significantly following the transition, with early performance signals scaling into sustained engagement over time. The format and editorial structure continue to be used today.

Confluence Brand Strategy developed the concept for a lifestyle-focused hospital magazine designed to connect Aspen Valley Health more meaningfully with its community. The strategy repositioned the publication from a traditional institutional newsletter into an editorial platform centered on wellness, outdoor living, regional health issues, and patient stories. Hospital news and promotion of services were baked into the articles.

We led the rebrand, creative direction, editorial direction, and content strategy for the magazine, shaping how the hospital communicates complex medical topics in an accessible and engaging way. The redesigned publication combined physician insight, regional storytelling, and lifestyle content for moms and kids to brain puzzles for adults to better reflect the interests and concerns of local residents.

The transformation produced significant results. Readership increased by more than 1,500%, dramatically expanding the magazine’s reach and strengthening Aspen Valley Health’s connection with the communities it serves.
